The (original) Red Lion

April 6th, 2012

To keep the all-country pub crawl going, I stopped at a bar that caught my eye over by Parliament.  There are tons of bars in NY and Boston called the red Lion, it seems, so I wanted to investigate if this was the original.

Obviously a charming pub.  I'd someday like a basement that looks like this.  I asked the bartendress if this was the original Red Lion.  It went something like this:

Me:  So I am from the New World, and we have many Red Lion pubs there.  Is it possible this is the original?
Her:  Hmmm.   I don't know.  There are many pubs named Red Lion.  We like lions
Me:  I know.  But no idea if this is the original?  Like Original Rays Pizza, you know?
Her:  I couldn't tell you, sorry!  But we do have a pretty famous division bell.  Its right there
Me;  What's a division bell, besides a late Pink Floyd album?
Her:  I don't know.  Its right there though.

It wasn't that exciting.  Just a rather plain looking electric bell.  I looked up on the interweb what a division bell is.  Its a late Pink Floyd album.

Here's my beer pick for the day.  Let me know if you have any ideas for gimmicks to spice up my bar reviews.  I'm struggling here.  I figured British bartenders would really carry this segment and its just not working out that way.

This is called 'bitter' and it has the hops on the tap, so I felt pretty good that I'd get a little flavor, but I was again, disappointed.  I do love the way the taps are all cask-pulls though.  I'm going to have to find a bartender who will let me get behind the bar and screw around a bit and see how it works.

PS:  A division bell is just a bell that's in the bars around Parliament that buzzes to tell the legislators that its time to wrap up the pub session and get back to work
